8 Fresh Activities for Your Children and Youth

By Becky Squire

The Children and Youth Program of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is an amazing way to help our youth develop spiritually, socially, physically, and intellectually. As we embrace these ideas, there are many creative ideas that can enhance the experience for our children and youth, making their journey within the program even more impactful and enjoyable.

1. Interactive Scripture Study Groups
Create small groups where children and youth can come together to study the scriptures in a more interactive and engaging manner. Incorporate multimedia presentations, discussions, and even role-playing to bring scriptural stories to life. This approach can help foster a deeper understanding of the gospel and encourage collaboration among peers.

2. Service Scavenger Hunts
Infuse the spirit of service by organizing scavenger hunts that lead the youth to various service opportunities within the community. This not only encourages teamwork but also instills a sense of compassion and responsibility. They can document their experiences and share them during group meetings, fostering a culture of gratitude and kindness.

3. Skill-building Workshops
Offer a diverse range of skill-building workshops that cater to the unique talents and interests of the children and youth. From arts and crafts to technology and leadership development, these workshops can provide valuable life skills while allowing participants to discover and nurture their passions.

4. Digital Storytelling Platforms
Embrace technology by creating digital platforms for children and youth to share their testimonies, experiences, and insights. This could be in the form of blogs, podcasts, or short videos. Not only does this empower participants to express themselves creatively, but it also creates a sense of community as they learn from each other's stories.

5. Outdoor Adventure Challenges
Plan outdoor adventures that challenge youth physically and mentally. Whether it's a hiking trip, camping expedition, or community service project, these activities promote resilience, teamwork, and a deep connection with nature. Such experiences can also serve as powerful metaphors for their spiritual journeys.

6. Cultural Appreciation Nights
Celebrate diversity by organizing cultural appreciation nights where children and youth can learn about different customs, traditions, and histories from around the world. This fosters an inclusive environment, promoting understanding and respect for various cultures and backgrounds.

7. Mentorship Programs
Establish mentorship programs within the Children and Youth organization, pairing older youth with younger ones. This not only provides guidance and support but also creates a sense of responsibility and accountability among the older participants. The mentorship relationships can extend beyond the program, creating lasting bonds.

8. Family History Projects
Encourage the exploration of family history through engaging projects. This could involve creating family trees, interviewing older family members, and even organizing family history fairs. Connecting with one's roots fosters a deeper appreciation for heritage and strengthens family bonds.

By incorporating these innovative ideas, the Children and Youth Program can become an even more dynamic and enriching experience for everyone involved. As we invest in the development of our youth, we are sowing the seeds for a future generation that is grounded in faith, compassion, and a profound sense of purpose.
