What Modern Revelation Teaches Us About Motherhood

By Becky Squire

As we celebrate the bicentennial of The First Vision this year, I have thought a lot about one of the greatest gifts we have been given through the restoration: modern revelation. Through living prophets and apostles, we continue to gain much knowledge about inspiring topics and eternal roles such as motherhood.

Although many of these ideas may seem traditional, we must remember that they are indeed given through modern revelation. These words are given to us through prophets and apostles directly from our Heavenly Father.

Jeffrey R. Holland

“To the women within the sound of my voice who dearly want to be mothers and are not, I say through your tears and ours on that subject, God will yet, in days that lie somewhere ahead, bring ‘hope to [the] desolate heart. Ultimately no blessing shall be withheld from the faithful, even if those blessings do not come immediately.  In the meantime we rejoice that the call to nurture is not limited to our own flesh and blood.”

“May I say to mothers collectively, in the name of the Lord, you are magnificent. You are doing terrifically well. The very fact that you have been given such a responsibility is everlasting evidence of the trust your Father in Heaven has in you.”

Gordon B. Hinckley

“Women for the most part see their greatest fulfillment, their greatest happiness in home and family. God planted within women something divine that expresses itself in quiet strength, in refinement, in peace, in goodness, in virtue, in truth, in love. And all of these remarkable qualities find their truest and most satisfying expression in motherhood.”

“The greatest job that any woman will ever do will be in nurturing and teaching and living and encouraging and rearing her children in righteousness and truth. There is no other thing that will compare with that, regardless of what she does.”

"Mothers, beloved sisters, we love you for who you are and what you do for all of us."

Henry B. Eyring

"As mother, teacher, or nurturing Saint, she molds living clay to the shape of her hopes. In partnership with God, her divine mission is to help spirits live and souls be lifted. This is the measure of her creation. It is ennobling, edifying, and exalting.”

"It takes much the same preparation for the wonderful day when the Lord calls you to an assignment as a mother. But it will also take an even more loving heart than you needed earlier. It will take faith in Jesus Christ beyond what has ever before been in your heart. And it will take a capacity to pray for the influence, direction, and comfort of the Holy Ghost beyond what you may have felt was even possible."

M. Russell Ballard

“There is no role in life more essential and more eternal than that of motherhood. While women live in homes under many different circumstances—married, single, widowed, or divorced, some with children and some without—all are beloved of God, and He has a plan for His righteous daughters to receive the highest blessings of eternity.”

Ezra Taft Benson

“First, take time to always be at the crossroads when your children are coming or going—when they leave and return from school—when they leave and return from dates—when they bring friends home. Be there at the crossroads whether your children are six or sixteen. Second, mothers, take time to be a real friend to your children. Listen to your children, really listen. Talk with them, laugh and joke with them, sing with them, play with them, cry with them, hug them, honestly praise them.”

“Do you want a principle for successful motherhood? Make time to teach your children the gospel and principles of gospel living when they are young.  It may be that you too will need to “renounce the world” and devote above twenty years of the prime of life in hopes to save the souls of your children.”

"It is mother’s influence during the crucial formative years that forms a child’s basic character. Home is the place where a child learns faith, feels love, and thereby learns from mother’s loving example to choose righteousness. How vital are mother’s influence and teaching in the home—and how apparent when neglected!"

Dieter F. Uchtdorf

“If you are a mother, you participate with God in His work of creation—not only by providing physical bodies for your children but also by teaching and nurturing them. If you are not a mother now, the creative talents you develop will prepare you for that day, in this life or the next.”

D. Todd Christofferson

“There is not a higher good than motherhood and fatherhood in marriage. There is no superior career, and no amount of money, authority, or public acclaim can exceed the ultimate rewards of family.”

Neil L. Andersen

“To mothers who are raising their children without a father in the home, I promise you that as you speak of Jesus Christ, you will feel the power of heaven blessing you.”

Russell M. Nelson

“The highest and noblest work in this life is that of a mother.”
