The temple is a sacred place for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It’s a place of peace, learning, and personal revelation where we make covenants and receive blessings. While going to the temple is a powerful and enriching experience, there's always room to make each visit even more meaningful. Here are 10 ways we as members of the Church can deepen our connection with the temple and get more out of our temple experience.

1. Prepare Spiritually Before You Go

Preparation starts long before you step inside the temple. Spend time in personal prayer, read your scriptures, and ponder the importance of the covenants you’ve made. When you approach the temple with an open heart, you’ll be more receptive to the Spirit and ready for deeper learning.

2. Bring a Question or Concern

The temple is a place of revelation. If you have a question, struggle, or concern, bring it with you. As you participate in temple ordinances and ponder the sacred truths you learn, the Spirit can answer your questions, guide your decisions, and bring clarity to your life.

3. Come with an Attitude of Gratitude

Expressing gratitude in the temple changes your perspective. Think about the blessings you’ve received, the covenants you’ve made, and the opportunities for spiritual growth. Gratitude enhances the sacred nature of the experience and invites the Spirit to teach you.

4. Learn the Temple Symbols

The symbols in the temple are rich with meaning. Take time to learn about the significance of things like the temple garment, the altar, and even the lighting. Understanding these symbols will help you gain a deeper appreciation for the ordinances and your connection with God.

5. Take a Quiet Moment for Reflection

Before or after participating in the ordinances, take a few moments to sit quietly. Reflect on your personal relationship with God, think about the Savior’s atoning sacrifice, and ponder how you can strengthen your commitment to live a more Christlike life.

6. Bring Names for Proxy Work

One of the great blessings of the temple is the opportunity to perform ordinances for those who have passed on. Bringing family names allow you to serve others and feel connected to your ancestors. It also brings the added blessing of feeling the power of the work unfold in your own life.

7. Dress and Act with Reverence

The way you dress and behave in the temple can influence the spirit you invite. Wearing modest, appropriate clothing, arriving on time, and participating reverently shows respect for the sacred space and encourages you to focus on the spiritual significance of your visit.

8. Learn the Language of the Temple

The temple has its own unique language that can sometimes feel unfamiliar or difficult to understand. Take the time to study the temple endowment and ordinances. As you learn more about the language and teachings of the temple, you will begin to find deeper meaning in each visit.

9. Invite the Spirit Through Music

The power of sacred music can enhance your temple experience. Listen to hymns or other spiritually uplifting songs on your way to the temple. Music helps prepare your mind and heart to be more receptive to the Spirit, and it can bring a sense of peace as you enter the sacred space.

10. Seek Personal Revelation

The temple is a place where personal revelation can flow abundantly. As you participate in ordinances, listen carefully for promptings and impressions from the Holy Ghost. Whether it’s a thought, an idea, or a quiet feeling, these moments of revelation can help you navigate your life and draw closer to Heavenly Father.

The temple is a powerful place of peace, learning, and personal transformation. By preparing spiritually, seeking personal revelation, and approaching the temple with reverence and gratitude, you can deepen your connection to God and receive greater insights and blessings. The more we invest in our temple worship, the more we will feel the peace and joy that come from making and keeping sacred covenants with our Heavenly Father.

I can personally attest to the difference it makes to bring your own names. All temple work is sacred and can benefit the individual but having that personal connection to the one you are serving as proxy for makes it more meaningful and personal. I’ve noticed a difference as I’ve shifted away from doing the temple provided names to doing the work for my own family. I’ve also found it more meaningful when I can assist someone in my congregation with their family names. I feel like I’m serving two people, one of whom I have a relationship with from being in the same branch, ward, or stake.
